Ptyxis Ecology

Ptyxis ecology, run by BBS member and former recorder for Northumberland v.-c. 67 John O'Reilly, organise the following courses.

More information is available here.

24-25 April: INTRODUCTION TO BRYOPHYTES AS INDICATOR SPECIES. For the complete novice. We concentrate on field characters for identifying common species; in particular those useful as indicators of soil pH and NVC communities. We usually see between 30 and 40 of the 'top 50' most useful species.

1-2 May 2017: SPHAGNUM IDENTIFICATION AND ECOLOGY. This is a field-based course aimed at beginners. We will identify roughly 15 of the most common and ecologically important species using a field key. By seeing the species several times in different situations you will get an idea of the range of variation within each species.

Oct 2017 - Mar 2018: BRYOPHYTE IDENTIFICATION: DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE.
Oct 2017 - Mar 2018: SPHAGNUM IDENTIFICATION: DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE.
Both distance learning courses are designed to build on an initial introductory course and give ongoing support with developing your identification skills. You identify bryophytes in the field and collect specimens. You then send the named specimens to us for checking and feedback.
