Standards: HISPID3

HISPID3 - Herbarium Information Standards and Protocols for Interchange of Data is an accession-based format for the interchange of electronic herbarium specimen information. It has been developed and adopted by a consortium of the Australian herbaria. Although the HISPID3 documentation makes it clear that the transferred fields should be considered as specimen-, not taxon-based, BG-BASE handles this information in a relational structure, and therefore the fields specified in HISPID3 come from a variety of tables.

Features of the HISPID3 standard include:

  • variable-length field format, with field names preceding data for that field
  • designed for transfer of information, not for storage of information.

See the HISPID3 home page for further information.

BG-BASE is broadly compatible with much of the HISPID3 standard, even though no attempt has yet been made to make these two systems compatible. The HISPID3 standard defines two groups of data elements to be transferred: file identification fields, and accession information fields. The former are set up during a transfer; the latter come from the database. These latter fields are listed in the table below along with a brief explanation of BG-BASE table and field that supplies each HISPID3 field.
