Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris grows on poor soil with little lime. There are some plants that mainly occur in pinewood although many of these also grow on moorland. There are a few that are only found in pinewood.
Deciduous trees such as Oak Quercus species have a ground flora that changes throughout the year. Some flower in the spring before there are leaves on the trees and others, such as mosses and ferns, can grow in deep shade.
