Bare exposed mountain top
Rocky screes with big boulders
Lime-rich mountain ledge
Bare exposed mountain tops and ridges have very low-growing plants that hug the ground on the windswept plateau. The vegetation is similar to the tundra.   Specialised plants grow in sheltered hollows among lime-free rocks where there is little soil and possibly also prolonged snow-cover in the winter .   Plants on lime-rich cliffs and gullies are sheltered and protected from grazing. They benefit from seeping nutrient-rich water to produce a wide variety of plants.
