Genus Closterium

Description:
Cells single. Spindle-shaped or cylindrical, and, apart from a few exceptions, curved (lunate or arcuate). No median constriction, but one or several transverse suture lines near the centre, at the juncture of old and new semicells. One chloroplast per semicell, entire or with longitudinal ridges, and with varying numbers of pyrenoids scattered or parallel to long axis of cell.

Mostly in the metaphyton of acidic pools, and in many cases associated with Sphagnum or other mosses.
