William Smith's 2 part account of the diatoms of Britain covers almost 400 taxa.
It contains 62 black and white plates, with 5 colour plates of cells in their sexually
reproductive phase. The frontispieces (right) to the two volumes are also in colour and show a
selection of the species discussed in the text.
