Genus Euastrum

Description:
Cells single, usually longer than broad. Most taxa compressed, with incision at the isthmus clearly visible. Marked median incision at apex of cells. In most taxa the semicells have lobed margins. Cell walls usually porous, may have additional ornamentation such as warts, granules, larger pores and spines. Chloroplasts variable but mostly compact and lobate.

Euastrum occurs in the benthos of mildly acidic waters, mostly in weedy pools. Some taxa are found in alkaline waters.
