Genus Staurodesmus

Description:
Cells single, mostly small. Semicells generally triradiate, but biradiate and quadriradiate taxa also exist. Cell wall smooth, with a single papilla or spine at the apical angle of each semicell. Isthmus cylindrically elongated.

Generally occurs in the plankton or metaphyton of acidic, oligotrophic ponds and lakes.
