Blackford Pond

Blackford Pond, 1:25000 map

Blackford Pond

Blackford Pond lies within the city of Edinburgh, at United Kingdom Grid Reference NT 253709 (55° 55' 31"N, 3° 11' 45"W), at an altitude of c 70 m above UK chart datum. It is exactly 3 km and almost due south from the Scott Monument on Princes Street.

The map shows the location of Blackford Pond (left, unlabelled, near the upper 'P') in relation to the Kings Buildings campus of the University of Edinburgh (at the right), where the first research on Blackford Pond diatoms was undertaken.

The open areas SW of the Pond (in the first two fields marked) are occupied by garden allotments, which are clearly visible in current Google Earth images. These areas, together with the western part of Blackford Hill and  parts of the surrounding residential areas, must drain into the Pond via groundwater, but there are no visible inflows.

Blackford Pond is one of a dozen or more small lakes and ponds within the city of Edinburgh, many of which have been sampled at least once for diatoms since 1980. These are indicated on the Google Earth image of the city of Edinburgh and its immediate surroundings on the 'Early history' page. The scale bar inserted on the Google Earth image is 5 km.

Information about the map: the printed version of this map is part of the 1:25000 scale series published by the Ordnance Survey, with grid squares 1 km × 1 km.
