Algae World: Sellaphora

Species list

Since Sellaphora was rescued from obscurity in 1989, many new species have been described and the taxonomy of the genus has already degenerated and become 'difficult'. Species descriptions are scattered in the literature and there is no comprehensive taxonomic treatment of Sellaphora species, either in Sellaphora or in Navicula, where Sellaphora species were previously placed. Identification of Sellaphora species by morphology alone is unsafe in many cases.

The following are the independent taxon names known to us in Sellaphora (November 2012)

The list includes the formally named Sellaphora species, varieties and forms that we have been able to find (excluding nomenclatural synonyms), aided by the invaluable Catalogue of Diatom Names. Please contact us if you find any omissions. Presence in the list does not imply that we agree with the taxonomy (interpretations, descriptions or diagnoses) given. In due course, we will supply an analysis of each species.

Taxon authors are given unabbreviated and in standard form according to the International Plant Names Index (which lists almost all authors who have described diatom taxa).
