The checklist was compiled from published taxonomic monographs, revisions, new species descriptions, floras, florulas and floristic inventories or lists occurring in six seasonally dry tropical forest regions of Peru. Herbarium material was examined to confirm and add records. The list includes woody plants which can reach at least 2m height at some stage of their lifecycle. Thus, shrubs, trees, arborescent and erect cacti and sometimes lianas are included in the list.

Seasonally dry forest (SDF) regions considered

A very broad concept of seasonally dry forest formations to be included in this list has been taken. Consequently, sometimes some of the vegetation can be referred to as scrub or matorral, but since there is yet no clear distinction between these vegetation types all of them have been included.

A) Tumbes-Piura seasonally dry montane forests: covers SDFs above +/- 500masl along the western slopes of the Andes from Tumbes and Piura to La Libertad, including those in Cajamarca.

B) Tumbes-Piura seasonally dry lowland forests: covers SDF below +/- 500masl along the western slopes of the Andes from Tumbes to La Libertad.

C) Marañon dry valley system: covers SDF along the Marañon valley up to 3000masl and adjacent tributaries (e.g. Utcubamba, Huancabamba, Chamaya rivers) roughly up to where the Chamaya meets the Marañon.

D) Mantaro dry valley system: covers the SDF along the Mantaro valley from approximately 900 to 2200masl.

E) Apurimac dry valley system: covers the SDF along the Apurimac valley from approximately 72ºW to where the Pampas river meets the Apurimac. This area includes the Pampas and Tablachaca river vegetation.

D) Tarapoto seasonally dry forests: This are includes the striking seasonal vegetation south of Tarapoto in San Martin department, sometimes following the Huallaga valley, but best represented in the Juanjui-Bellavista forests.

Endemism

Endemic plants are either noted as Endemic to Peru or Endemic to SW Ecuador and NW Peru (belonging to the Tumbesian Centre of Endemism).

If a woody species has a distribution outside any of the the seasonally dry forest regions, the department(s) where it occurs is(are) reported.
